FASTER, HARDER, BETTER…

FASTER, HARDER, BETTER…

Projects

THAN EVER BEFORE… AT WACKEN

To pull this off, it needed highly skilled technical and creative engineers, some pairs of extraordinary ears, a big portion of good ´metal taste´…

… and the guts to go down new routes.

The audio for both the Wacken Faster and Harder Stages were not only mixed on site in one room, but also remotely mastered and quality-controlled from our Cologne based studio.

Selecting numerous DirectOut Technologies products, the RRN team used six fully-equipped PRODIGY.MCs and PRODIGY.MPs, a couple of MADI.SRCs, two EXBOX.RAV, SPLIT.CONVERTORs, an EXBOX.MD, two M.1K2 to distribute and switch it all and six AVID ProTools systems to mix and record all shows.

We freely switched engineers between the stages depending on their taste, individual experience and their mixing history with the performing artists. There was no fixed allocation to ´one truck` as in the past.

The sound was amazing and as a bonus… we saved 1.6 tons of carbon doing it the sized down and remote way.

Yes - faster, harder, better!

FASTER, HARDER, MIXHUB

FASTER, HARDER, MIXHUB

Projects · Inside the MixHub, we were using six ProTools systems to record, mix and master.

Two DirectOut M.1K2s served as central switching and distribution units and two PRODIGY.MPs in a redundant setup to connect with the RemoteMix/Mastering Room in Cologne and to distribute the transmission signals.

FASTER, HARDER, STAGE RACK

FASTER, HARDER, STAGE RACK

Projects · Our newly designed Stage Racks contain two fully-equipped PRODIGY.MCs that can take analogue, MADI, Dante, RAV and AVB signals.

Working very happily with DirectOut devices, Globcon simultaneously controlled production on stage, in the MixHub and to/from our studio in Cologne.

Backup recording was managed using Steinberg Nuendo Live 3 and the audience submix with a Yamaha DM3 which was also controlled via iPad from the Mix Room and same time with a second iPad in Cologne.

The Stage Rack is also designed to handle a 'worst case' back-up scenario, sending a reasonable stereo signal to the world should a catastrophe occur.

FASTER, HARDER, CONTROL

Robbie Williams at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

Breathtaking, energetic and pure magic!

Robbie Williams at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

Projects · It was a great pleasure mixing the audio for the Telekom Live Stream alongside Robbie Williams' producer Richard Flack.

An extraordinary event - the artist's performance, the sound, the vision… a total work of art that will resonate with me for a long time.

Whilst we mixed live at the studio inside the Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall with a spectacular view of the stage, Erik Gierich mastered 'live and remote' in the acoustically perfect, brand new Studio Krauthausen in Cologne. Recording and technical management by Sven Raff.

Thank you Matthias Baumgartner, Lars Boelker and your crew at the ´Elphi´ for your great support.
And of course a big Thank You to Telekom Deutschland and Live Nation for continuously relying on our experience and expertise.

North and South

Lollapalooza 2022

Projects · Many thanks to Live Nation Hamburg and Telekom Germany for inviting us to manage the broadcast sound on North and South main stages at the Lollapalooza/Berlin 2022 festival.

Our new generation of talented engineers took full control of the faders remotely and at the venue. Erik Gierich and Alexandr Sitnikov (pictured) Remotely Mastered Live from Ballsaal Studios/Berlin whilst Jonas Gehrmann, Thomas Geiger, René Pinnau with Markus Winter and Björn Daheim assisting handled the audio at the venue. Head of IT was Karsten`Kasi`Heyn.

Broadcast Sound was produced by Peter Brandt, Charlie Bauerfeind and Sven Raff.

Many acts used our new Pre-Production mixing service which guarantees that the artists sound great from the very first note, even without a soundcheck.

Our new Pre-Production service combined with Remote Mixing/Mastering puts our broadcast sound quality into a class of its own and reinforces the fact that Mobile Sound Trucks are now a thing of the past.

Berlin Hamburg Remote

Telekom Streetgig Klassik

Projects · In Memory Of Tobias Lehmann.

Some years ago, this would have been my personal nightmare:

The scenario involves some of the best talent in the world playing Beethoven in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. It would be my job to deliver a live sound quality that represents the incredible ability of this orchestra. And I am controlling everything 250 kilometres away.

Today, things have changed; ‘remote control' is a regular occurrence – as it allows for many more benefits in quality, technology and budget.

I’m now sitting in the best possible environment; Teldex Studios in Berlin and I’m with my renowned colleague and multiple Grammy winner, Tonmeister Tobias Lehmann. We’re working live and remote, but together we craft a live sound that has an enhanced dynamic and detail.

We produced Street Gig Classics for Telekom Magenta and mixed the whole show remotely.

The difference in quality was audible for everyone to hear. Once again, the Remote Recording workflow added to the production value whilst saving time, travel costs and reducing our carbon footprint.

Since we refined our remote tech stack, we were even able to produce the whole show using consumer level internet and a mix of 5G, DSL and fibre connection. I’m stoked to see what we can achieve next with our remote system. We’re just at the beginning!

And many thanks to Tobias and Team Teldex. It was an honour once again to have you in the crew! And thanks again to Telekom Deutschland and Live Nation for using our Remote Recording, Mixing and Mastering process again.

RRN Wins IBC Innovation Award

RRN Wins IBC Innovation Award

Projects · "So proud to be part of the 'best of the best' - We've just won this year's 'IBC Innovation Award' with our remote production 'Around the World in 80ms'. It's a tech stack that allows us to control and direct any production with talent connected from all over the world.

My team at Remote Recording Network and our fellow partners from Riedel Communications are so pleased to receive this award for the joint project.

Our team connected camera operators, lighting designers, video directors and sound engineers scattered across the globe, proving once and for all that it is possible to control an entire music event production remotely. I want to thank TV Skyline and Riedel and all of our supporting partners - video, lighting and sound directors and the forty piece crew around Europe and the US who made this happen," said Peter Brandt smiling proudly.

Dick Hobbs, chair of the IBC2021 Innovation Awards Judging panel, "We saw some outstanding innovation submitted for the awards this year. On behalf of my fellow judges, congratulations to the finalists and winners, for being very much the 'best of the best'!

Beethoven X Artificial Intelligence meets Remote Mixing.

World Premiere

Beethoven X Artificial Intelligence meets Remote Mixing.

Projects · On behalf of Telekom Deutschland and Live Nation, Remote Mixing recently produced the broadcast sound for the world premiere of the Beethoven KI Project and once again, set another milestone in remote control of high-quality production.

Whilst Dirk Kaftan conducted the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn performing movements three and four of the AI Project and the eighth Beethoven Symphony, we mixed the music streaming sound in real time in the ideal, acoustically calibrated control room of Tonstudio Boecker in the neighbouring city of Cologne.

Our Remote Recording Network Hub - powered by Riedel ROC - transported audio, video, communication and control data over secure connections. Consumer internet was used with a mix of Telekom 5G, DSL and fibre connection.

Our Team:
René Möller(Teldex) - Tonmeister
Peter Brandt - Balance engineer
Sven Raff - Recording engineer
Oliver Voges - Recording engineer
Karsten `Kasi`Heyn`(Riedel) - IT and communication engineer

Many thanks to Artur Koll (Yamaha), Jan Ehrlich (Direct Out), Henry Röhr (MTI) for the technical support and  Andreas Maier and his team.

Machiavelli Sessions

CHEMNITZ BERLIN REMOTE

Machiavelli Sessions

Projects · Here's another remote audio production that we want to tell you about.

This time we were at The Opera House in Chemnitz recording The Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie with conductor Gordon Hamilton and soloists Max Herre, Sugar MMFK and Nura for the `Machiavelli Sessions`.

260km away, our 'remote' production team was based in Ballsaal Studio, Berlin and included Tonmeister Tobias Lehmann(Teldex), engineer Alexandre Sitnikov with technical director Peter Brandt producing.

Despite the distance, it really felt as though we were sitting in the room next door to the orchestra as the studio's acoustic environment and monitoring was perfectly-suited for this orchestral application. This appears to be one of several new benefits to remote location productions.

The event was produced take by take with flawless communications and audio transmission and with zero latency on the click tracks.

From the 'Green' aspect, we saved three crew travel, 12 nights of hotel accommodation, sound truck travel and the time-consuming setup of a control room. As a bonus we saved an average 800kg of carbon dioxide compared to the conventional location recording process. This includes the saved electricity used in the sound truck and fuel for crew travel and tractor-trailer.

Thank you: Sven Raff, Sven Kallenbach from 360X Media, Sebastian `Bub´ Wolf, Dominik Opiela, Adapoe and the great crew from the Chemnitz Opera House, Jens Lahnor from 2Bild in Cologne and Karsten`Kasi`Heyn from Riedel Communications.

Riedel and RRN Deliver Remote Mastering Service for Peter Maffay

Riedel and RRN Deliver Remote Mastering Service for Peter Maffay

Projects · by Serkan Güner/ Riedel

Riedel Communications and Remote Recording Network (RRN) today announced their collaboration on a unique remote mastering service for a live stream concert performed by Peter Maffay and local musicians from Steintor-Varietè in Halle, Germany.

The special acoustic concert, which took place on April 13th (Easter Monday), was mixed on location by Werner Schmidl and, using RRN's Remote Mixing facility, mastered remotely by Peter Brandt from Studio Boecker in Cologne. Both locations were connected through the Riedel ROC (Remote Operations Center) in Wuppertal, serving as the communications and signal transmission hub of the operation. From here, ROC engineers monitored communications, remotely configured all signals and transmitted all audio streams between venue and studio.

This method of communication and audio transmission was jointly developed by Riedel and Remote Music Productions, a subsidiary of RRN, and is setting standards in producing high quality, environmentally friendly and cost-effective audio transmissions.

“Together with our partners at RRN, we put together an extremely compact plug & play system that could be linked quickly and easily to our ROC via a WAN connection. Without having to worry about setup and communications, Peter and his team could fully concentrate on their task at hand – delivering the perfect sound experience to listeners all over Germany,” said Carsten Voßkühler, Project Manager at Riedel Communications. “We are happy to play a part in the development of this groundbreaking remote service, which is a both cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solution for live event recording, mixing and broadcasting.”

Peter Brandt commented, "Only 4U high, this system is ideal to get the maximum out of FOH mixes and is more than suitable for broadcast and streaming. It was a joint effort from the FOH engineers, Riedel technology and the RRN team. The result was extraordinary!"

Telekom Street Gigs

Projects · The Telekom Street Gigs motto, 'The best bands, as nobody expects them!' has possibly gained a new meaning in March 2020.

Respecting the demands of the coronavirus outbreak, but not wanting to disappoint invited fans and viewers, Telekom and James Blunt recently took the brave decision to continue with the concert in the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg - but to perform to an empty hall and stream the concert to the public.

Remote Recording Network produced the audio recording of the concert using Remote Mixing and their Remote Mix Room, Studio Boecker… 400km away in Cologne!

Peter Brandt commented, "James Blunt was a true professional, he played with such energy and emotion. You really wouldn't have known that he was playing to an empty room!"

Since the first concert in June 2007 with Billy Talent in a Cologne scrap yard, Remote Recording has handled the sound for the Telekom Street Gigs.

Montreux Jazz Festival 2018 in Genuine Immersive 3D Audio

Projects · Cologne based 3D-audio production company Sphereo has been contracted by the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival, EPFL University Lausanne and Western Digital to record and stream performances in the Stravinsky Auditorium in Montreux.

A key feature of Sphereo 3D-audio is its use of ‘3rd order ambisonics to binaural’ and SPAT Revolution 3D-audio mixing engine, both in combination with a custom-built Sphereo position-tracking system.

The Sphereo audio mixes use precisely positioned instruments and soloists (in height and pan) which smoothly and accurately follow a moving 360 degree video picture in the Virtual Reality headset. This approach makes the VR live concert experience truly realistic.

This is a giant step forward in bringing high-quality 3D-audio and Virtual Reality to consumer devices such as mobile phones, tablets or VR Goggles.

Thanks to Sphereo for relying on Remote Recording Network’s music mixing expertise.

Recording On The Green!

Projects · August 2012 – Another RemoteTaxi road trip… but this time off to Mainz in Rheinland-Pfalz to record the RPR open-air pop festival for radio station RPR1. Our venue was “Grosse Bleiche”, the seat of the of the Rheinland-Pfalz Goverment which played host to Mic Donet, Glasperlenspiel, Johannes Strate, Marlon Roudette and Culcha Candela  in its beautiful surrounding parkland.

Recording was handled by Marko Schneider and RemoteTaxi’s Peter Brandt again using Rocknet audio distribution enabling a multitrack recording. The tracks were mixed the next day by Andi Heinen at MOS Studios and mastered by Marko Schneider at Skywalk and transmitted on RPR1 the day after that!
